So, The Finance Minister Didn’t Appoint A Communications Taskforce After all…

It seems the Communication Task Force set up by Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube has already been laid to rest. In fact, if you believe what the Ministry of Information says then the Communication Task Force never truly was.

The Ministry of Information’s official Twitter account took to the realm of social media to denounce the task force and they made it clear that this team was yet to become operational. The tweet read:

Minister of Finance, Hon @MthuliNcube would like to inform the public that he doesn’t have a spokesperson outside institutions of govt. Regarding the “Communications Taskforce”, he is yet to operationalise it as he is dealing with requirements of PRAZ & Civil Service Commission

One interesting reply was from openparly who asked why papers signed by the Finance Minister himself pointed to this appointment yet the Ministry of Information was not acknowledging the appointment.

The Ministry of Information acknowledged these documents but played them down as a mistake:

Mistakes were made but advice from govt lawyers indicate there are legal housekeeping issues regarding the Procurement Act Cap 22:14 which need to be regularised and the Ministry of Finance is dealing with that

Does this come entirely as a shock? Not really. Lumumba himself tweeted that he was at risk of losing his job on the night he made revelations that led to the suspension of 4 officials at the RBZ:

Tonight I will talk about the alarming levels of corruption sadly within my own Ministry. I have no idea how we allowed it to get this far. Might not have a job after this but the people deserve to know how their country is being run! See u on FBlive 9PM

If anything this looks like something that may have been carefully planned but why resort to these weird and controversial measures when there are bodies such as the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Committee waiting to do their job?
