How to overcome temptations in life
If Christ, the only begotten Son of God, was tempted you can count on it dear child of God that the adversary who roams about seeking whom he may devour will soon knock on your door, if he has not done that already. But the coming of temptation is of the least importance. The major issue is whether you are ready to overcome it.
Temptation is an invitation or a suggestion to commit a sin while sin is the actual transgression of the law of God. Thus to be tempted is not to sin but to yield to temptation is. Our degree of vulnerability to temptation in any area is determined by the strength of our early exposure to sinful allurements, lack of appetite control and lust. Temptation is a chronic element in all our circumstances but it is acute in crises. The devil finds us easy prey when loneliness, fatigue and hunger are acute so beware of these breeding grounds.
Every believer, no matter how strong they are in other areas, has an area of weakness. Regrettably the adversary knows it and he knows just how to strike home. It is imperative that every man knows his point of weakness for there the devil resides. If you yield to temptation you are liable to punishment because you chose to accept the invitation instead of rejecting it. The fact that Christ was tempted yet without sin warrants the belief that temptation does not imply inevitable sin.
So let us learn how the master overcame temptations in the days of his flesh. He was quick to use the sacred scriptures. He quoted relevant scriptures to ward off every dart of temptation. If Christ overcame by saying, ‘It is written,’ there is no other way of escape for you his follower. Never neglect the word of God for knowledge of the divine precept, promise and power is the first prerequisite for successful emergence in any encounter with temptations.
