Cultural superpowers at HIFA
Originally known as Lanzhou Song and Dance Troupe, Lanzhou Song and Dance Theatre was established in 1970 in Lanzhou, a major city along the Silk Road as well as the capital of Gansu Province.
Lanzhou Song and Dance Theatre is a large scale professional performance group.
During the 30 years since its establishment, it has presented successful performances in varied locations such as Russia, Japan, Italy, Namibia, Botswana, Iraq and Lebanon.
Insisting on the principle of exploring the rich culture of China’s western area, and pursuing the best, Lanzhou Song and Dance Theatre produce world-class works which leave audiences spellbound.
Their contribution to HIFA’s 10th anniversary will be another star in an already sparkling dance programme at the 7 Art’s theatre.
From the glittering stages of Bangalore, with the assistance of The Indian Embassy and The Indian Council for Cultural Relations New Delhi, comes the sensational Hindustani vocalist and dancer Susheela Mehta for a virtuoso performance at the 7 Arts Theatre at HIFA 2009 to be held between 28 April and 3 May.
Susheela is an exponent of the Bharatnatyam dance which is originated in Tamil Nadu, a State in South India.
It is one of the oldest living dance traditions in the world.
She also practices the more robust Agra.
Gharana is a traditional form of vocal music that dates back to around 1300 AD which has only a few practitioners left worldwide.
HIFA 2009 is a celebration of the Festival’s 10th anniversary under the theme “Enligh10ment”.
Susheela Mehta’s exotic performance will be part of the Festival’s trade-mark eclectic programming.
