Understanding gospel of prosperity
The first question was, “Is it true that God will bless people who just give without working hard?” It is not entirely true. Scriptures abound that show us that God blesses the work of our hands and that believers should not be slothful in business (Deuteronomy 28:12, Romans 12:11). According to scriptures true wealth comes from honest labour. The Apostle Paul gave a command that those who would not work should not eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10).
However, Bishop Oyedepo explains the vital connection between giving and work. He said that giving opens the door for God’s blessings but working takes delivery of the blessings. Every believer must live as Kings who go out into the market place and work hard to earn a living. When you are a giver, the Bible says you will eat the fruits of labour because it is blessed of God. Abraham became rich through industry and generosity.
The second question was, ‘Will people who are not walking righteously get God’s blessings even if they give much to the work of God? God will not bless the gifts of sin but the gifts of the righteous will be blessed. Cain’s gift was not acceptable to God because his heart was not right towards God. This means righteousness is a prerequisite for the acceptance of our gifts and the subsequent blessing of God in our lives.
The third question was, “Is it possible for everyone to prosperwhen the Bible says that the poor will always be there on earth?” It is possible for everyone to prosper but not to the same degree. Prosperity comes in different forms and different levels. But those who will make a choice not to obey God’s laws of prosperity and the physically handicapped will need the help of others so alms giving will meet their needs. Absolute dependence upon God and temporary dependence on each other will keep us humble, kind and loving.
The fourth question was “Can someone sow a financial seed and reap a harvest of good marriage or good health? Yes for two reasons. The first reason being that money is a medium of exchange. The second reason is that the sowed money is wrapped up in the word of God which is the true seed (Luke 8:11) And when you speak the word of God on the money that you sow you reap what the word promises. The money is just a precious substance backing up theword.
However, sowing money for good health or marriage should not be done apart from observing the principles and processes that govern good health and marriage. Giving away money shows your level of earnestness because people’s hearts are closer to their wallets than anything else.
We will talk about the true biblical view of prosperity in the next article.
