THE return of the Harare International Festival of the Arts (Hifa) has sparked excitement among arts lovers across Zimbabwe.

Following the announcement, social media was awash with excitement as fans and revellers expressed their eagerness for the return of the much-loved festival, which was first held in 1999.

Award-winning filmmaker Nico Abote welcomed the return of the festival as his film “The Daughters of Legends”, was shot during Hifa in 2013 and complet ed in 2023, and has been earning recognition at various festivals.

“Ecstatic… the best news on Independence Day for sure. This is arguably one of the finest artistic gatherings in Africa and we needed it back. I’m looking forward to it,” he told this publication.

Selmor Mtukudzi, who featured on Abote’s production, was equally excited.

“So happy to hear this won derful news! We missed you Hifa.”

Tinotenda Valentine, a showgoer, was also happy.

“I can’t wait for it. I am super excited for its return.”

Over the years, Hifa has hosted major performances from both local and international stars.

Winky D has been one of the festival’s standout performers, with his shows consistently drawing large crowds and earning praise for their energy and creativity.

The festival has also featured acclaimed international acts such as Ismaël Lô, Salif Keita and South African group Bongo Maffin.

Founded by Manuel Bagorro, Hifa is not only Zimbabwe’s largest arts festival but also one of the biggest on the African continent.

Its return is expected to revitalise the local arts scene and once again provide a major platform for artists.

This year’s edition, themed “Up”, is scheduled to run from August 3 to August 9.

The 2027 edition is set for April 26 to May 2, while the 2028 festival will take place from May 1 to May 7.

As part of its return, organisers of the Hifa say they will also present “Laughter, the Best Medicine”, a monthly stand-up comedy series, with launch performances scheduled for June 26, 27 and 28 in Harare, and July 4 in Bulawayo.

“As Hifa rolls out, it will also present: ‘Laughter, the Best Medicine’ monthly stand-up comedy series,” reads part of the statement from the organisers.
