Warriors qualify for 2019 AFCON finals

FIRST half goals from Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona sealed Zimbabwe’s spot in the 2019 AFCON finals as the Warriors ran out 2-0 winners over Congo at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The Warriors have officially stamped their ticket to Cairo courtesy of a scintillating first half performance which saw them defeat the Red Devils of Congo 2-0 in front of a packed crowd at the iconic National Sports Stadium.

The hosts went into the match needing at least a draw to book their place at the continental showpiece event which begins in June this year.

But the Warriors were more than up for the challenge as they started on the front foot from the very first minute, making it very clear to the visitors that they were going for the win.

And it didn’t take long for the hosts to break the deadlock with Khama Billiat curling in an absolute beauty of a free-kick in the 18th minute.

That goal seemed to have injected a sense of urgency from the visitors as they intensified their attacking play, regularly threatening the Warriors goal with some offensive foot work.

The Warriors were, however, dangerous on the counter with the speedy trio of Kadewere, Billiat and Musona looking particularly menacing.

And it was the latter of the three, Knowledge Musona who doubled the hosts lead in the 36th minute as he took advantage of a misplaced pass from a Congolese defender and showed immaculate close control to unleash a thunderous dipping shot into the bottom corner and send the crowd into delirium.

In the second half, the Warriors again started off on the front foot as they looked to apply the final nail in the visitors’ coffin but the finishing was a bit lacking.

As the game wore on, the Congolese looked more and more deflated with the hosts content to sit back and preserve their lead but the visitors did launch some decent attacking play with a couple of close calls.

In the end, it wasn’t enough to trouble the Warriors who held on for the victory which confirmed their place in the Afcon 2019 finals as leaders of Group G. – sportbrief.co.zw
