Harare derby in limbo
FOOTBALL lovers across the country anticipating for an explosive footballing weekend characterized by the famous Harare derby have been dealt a huge blow amid revelations that the match has been deferred to a later date.
Rufaro stadium which was set to be the venue is not yet ready whilst the giant National Sports stadium will host a religious event by Nigerian Pastor Chris Oyakhilome of the Christ Embassy church.
“We inspected Rufaro stadium but some touches are still to be done and it will need two more weeks before it can accommodate top flight football,” said ZIFA communications Manager Xolisani Gwesela.
The unavailability of alternative football facilities like Gwanzura and Lafarge stadiums has left the derby at the mercy of postponment.
It is however a situation with more questions than answers why a sporting facility gives preference to a religious event at the expense of a sporting event.
At the moment, only the police owned Morris Depot grounds are an alternative. However the magnitude of Sunday’s clash cannot be housed at Morris. – sportbrief.co.zw
