Nick Price expects to see sub-60 round in a major championship

Nick Price will captain the International side for a third time at next month’s Presidents Cup

FORMER world No 1 Nick Price believes it’s only a matter of time before somebody shoots a sub-60 round in a major championship.

The three-time major champion held the previous joint-low round of 63, which he posted in the third round of the 1986 Masters on his way to a tied-fifth finish.

Branden Grace broke the record at The Open last month with a history-making 62 at Royal Birkdale, with Price – who will captain the International side at this year’s Presidents Cup – expecting players to post even lower major rounds in the future.

“I think a 59 is imminent,” Price said during a Presidents Cup press conference on Tuesday. “I don’t know how long it’s going to take, but somebody is going to break 60 in a major.

“It took a long time for Al Geiberger to break 60 [on the PGA Tour] and since then there have been another eight or nine guys [to achieve it].

“The way the game is progressing is just incredible. I think it’s just evolution, it’s going to happen.”

The next major championship is the PGA Championship from August 10-13 at Quail Hollow, where Rory McIlroy holds the course record after carding a 10-under 61 at the 2015 Wells Fargo Championship. skynews.com
