Black Panther wins best cast at SAG awards

Black Panther wins top Screen Actors Guild award ahead of Oscars

Black Panther has won the Best Ensemble award at the Screen Actor Guild Awards. Marvel Studios made a commitment to changing the look of their movies with Black Panther, which is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe film to be led by a person of color. The studio put $200 million behind the blockbuster and surrounded star Chadwick Boseman with a great supporting cast.

Director Ryan Coogler took full advantage of the cast assembled by completely fleshing out Wakanda’s various tribes and royal family. Boseman was the star as future king of Wakanda T’Challa, Letitia Wright turned his sister Shuri into a breakout role, and Angela Bassett attempted to look over both as Queen Ramonda. Danai Gurira joined the franchise to play Okoye, the head of the Dora Milaje, and Lupita Nyong’o came aboard as Nakia. One of the biggest standouts was Michael B. Jordan’s turn as the villain Killmonger, but then the likes of Winston Duke (M’Baku), Daniel Kaluuya (W’Kabi), Sterling K. Brown (N’Jobu), and Forest Whitaker (Zuri) each made memorable additions.

The depth and talent of the ensemble was previously awarded with a nomination by the SAG Awards for Best Ensemble, and during tonight’s ceremony, Black Panther was named the winner. The movie also won Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble. The cast came out on top against BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Rich Asians, and A Star Is Born. Black Panther being able to win both of the categories for which it was nominated at the SAG Awards is just the latest in a long line of awards love to come the film’s way. The major blockbuster has had little trouble picking up nominations this awards season, but the Best Ensemble win is arguably the biggest victory for the film so far. Of course, the movie just received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, so these SAG wins could propel Black Panther toward an even bigger stage.

The winners at the SAG Awards and Oscars do not perfectly match, but there is plenty of history for them seeing eye to eye. Ever since the SAG Awards began the Best Ensemble category in 1995, the nominations for the category have been a strong indicator for which films will get Best Picture nominations by the Academy. But, taking it a step further, there’s also a solid track record to see who will win. Over the 23 year history of the Best Ensemble category, 11 movies have won Best Ensemble and Best Picture. Spotlight was the last film to do it in 2015, but now that Black Panther has a Best Ensemble win, maybe it has a real chance at being the twelfth movie to also take home Best Picture. – screenrant.com
