MTN has once again secured the top spot as South Africa’s leading mobile network.
THIS is according to the latest Mobile Network Quality Report from MyBroadband Insights for Q3 2024. The report, based on nearly 300 000 speed tests from 6 989 users conducted between July and September, highlights MTN’s continued dominance in network performance across the country.
With an impressive average download speed of 106.22 Mbps, MTN outperformed its competitors – Vodacom, Cell C, Telkom, and Rain. Vodacom was second with a respectable 94.07 Mbps, while Cell C showed significant improvement, jumping to 68.12 Mbps. Telkom and Rain lagged with 39.72 Mbps and 23.14 Mbps, respectively.
MTN excelled particularly in major cities like Tshwane, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Nelson Mandela Bay. Notably, it reclaimed the lead from Vodacom in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Vodacom, however, led in eThekwini and Mangaung and continued to deliver the fastest 5G speeds in the country.
MTN’s sustained network performance is largely attributed to its decade-long, R10 billion annual investment in infrastructure. This significant financial commitment has allowed it to stay ahead of competitors in terms of network quality.
The report further highlighted Cell C’s resurgence, with an increase in download speeds from 54.50 Mbps to 68.12 Mbps over the quarter, driven by CEO Jorge Mendes’ efforts to optimise the company’s virtual network on MTN’s infrastructure.
The Network Quality Score, a key measure based on download and upload speeds and latency, confirmed MTN’s top position with a perfect score of 10, followed by Vodacom (8.24), Cell C (7.03), Telkom (4.51), and Rain (4.01).
