Peña will perform at the 7 Arts Theatre on October 11 at 6.15pm. This will be the first time that he is performing in an African country and in Zimbabwe.
Flamenco music, which emerged from the marginalised working-class neighbourhoods of Andalusia, southern Spain, has the ability to grasp the most profound human emotions of drama, love and joy, which comprise the complexities of human sentiment.
Peña explains his music as “similar to the blues . . . has a tinge of sadness, an element of fight and rebellion. It is pain and suffering with explosions of great happiness. It is a symbol of Spain”.
The guitar is the only instrument traditionally used in Flamenco, and rightly so since it is able to combine percussive rhythmic elements with the softer lyrical line, essential to the performance of this music.
It is for this reason that Flamenco music and literature have been declared a World Heritage by UNESCO.
Paco Peña has been performing on the main stages of the world for more than 50 years. Entrance is free. The embassy advises that doors will be closed at commencement.
