Needless fear
When I was a young child I greatly feared to be alone in the darkness of the night. My mother knew about this needless fear and resolved to help me overcome it. She would send me alone to fetch firewood from the pile outside the kitchen. When she observed that I hesitantly and reluctantly sauntered from the fire-lit kitchen into the dark outside she would stand at the threshold and watch me go and come back. My sense of security in her watchful eye increased until I could bank on her promise to watch me as I went out. Later on she would remain seated and say to me, “Go my son. Fear not, I am watching you.” On hearing her reassuring words I would dash out to get firewood without even checking to see if she was really watching me. The fear had gone.
But in my reflections today I come to understand that I put faith in my mother’s promise to keep her eyes on me. Watching me meant that she was ready to come to my rescue in the event of danger cropping up. But I realise that even though she was ready to rescue me, she was likely to help me after suffering some harm because of distance between us. So my fear was not necessarily needless; my mother was not almighty. What could harm me in the dark could possibly harm her too. However, my confidence in her watchful eye quelled the fear.
Now if we can trust in the watchful eye of human beings, how much more must we trust in the watchful eye of God Almighty? My mother, being physical, is limited in space, time, strength and wisdom. But God is unlimited. The powerful words of the Psalmist, “The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous” were quoted and authenticated by Apostle Peter in his first epistle chapter three verse 12. With better revelation, Peter added that no one will harm the one who follows what is good.
Dear child of God, you might be in danger today but you can trust in the watchful eye of the Lord. Your foes might be orchestrating evil things to happen to you, but be rest assured of God’s deliverance. He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler. God is beforehand to the devil because every plot and stealthy move of your enemies lie bare before His all-seeing eye.
With God’s watchful eye you are always at a vantage point. They might be planning to oust you from your God-ordained position in business and employment but they are not aware that God’s eye is scanning around watching them. If they knew that they are under 24-hour surveillance of the divine eye they would not even attempt it. They schemed and attempted to destroy Daniel in the den of lions but the eye of the Lord was watching and Daniel emerged the winner and his enemies were put to shame. Some rose up against Daniel’s three Hebrew friends but they were also put to shame when the invisible eye of God sent a fourth man into the fiery furnace.
Are you going through the fire and the water today? Then take heart, as long as you are right and doing right in the sight of God, the fire of evil plots will not burn you and the swift current of rumours and false accusations will not drown you. The efforts of base people to move you away from your legal husband or wife will be rendered nugatory and ineffective by God’s watchful eye. God watches over His people with jealous care. As long as you fulfill the all-important condition of being righteous and innocent of the charges being laid against you, you can make recourse to God and your ‘Haman will be hanged in your place’.
The watchfulness of God’s eye is in two ways: to rescue, strengthen, guide and deliver the righteous and to expose, shame and cut- off the wicked ones. God’s face is against them that do evil. So you can count on this: those doing evil against you are kicking against pricks and they will not prevail. So yours is needless fear. Whether the trouble erupts from beneath or descends from above, be at rest like David and declare together with him that the Lord is a very present help in trouble therefore you shall not be afraid of what man can do to you.
If you are a righteous minister of God’s word and you are encountering hatred and opposition in doing God’s work, be sure to set your eyes on God instead of on the negative things. Victory will be yours.
If only a righteous believer could be conscious of God’s watchful eye, he or she would understand that all our fears are unnecessary. No wonder there are about 365 “fear nots” commands in the Bible.
