Something new, something refreshing

buffetIn these tough times restaurants need to make the most of special occasions. This has seen proprietors going all-out on all special occasions.
Increasingly Shop Café is catering for special functions and they are a good choice for an unusual wedding — ready to go the extra mile on bad roads to produce something memorable. Which they just did for a wedding picnic in a home near the Gairezi river.

Chef Michelle Small showed me the menu — which included an amazingly diverse range of dishes individually packed into picnic baskets for groups to share on the lawn overlooking the magnificent view. Chicken liver pate, spanakopita with mint yoghurt, smoked salmon quiche, parmesan chicken, rare roast beef and prawn cocktail were some of the treats.

Shop Café specialises in simple food with strong flavours — beautifully prepared and presented. Another wedding featured paella as the second supper for the late night dancers. Shop Café invited the families and some extras for a trial run and cooked paella for 50 in a huge, genuine paella dish on an open fire next to the flamboyant tree in the courtyard.

Filled with prawns, calamari and mussels, it was delicious and I believe even better at the actual wedding party.
