Typical signs of a curse on one’s life
A CURSE can be defined as an anointing to fail. In his book, Blessings and curses, author Derek Prince said that a curse could be likened to a long, evil arm stretched out from the past that rests upon people with a dark, oppressive force that inhibits the full expression of their personality.
It is an invisible barrier to receiving the blessings of the Christian life.
Prince added: “I have discovered that there are many people who are fighting something in their own lives that they don’t fully understand. Often there is an uncanny sense of stumbling just before reaching a long-sought goal. Something keeps them from leading a life of victory and fruitfulness.”
Before you rush to say there is a curse on your life or another person’s life, you need to understand that not all struggles in life are a result of curses. Joseph struggled very much in the hands of his brothers but that was not a curse. Paul went through many hardships but he was not cursed. These people of God suffered in the hands of men but the root cause was doing the will of God and character refinement. Thus reliance on the Holy Spirit for revelation and discernment is required.
Here are seven signs of curses taken from Deuteronomy 28 and Prince’s book explaining blessings and curses.
* Mental and emotional breakdown — this indication is shown in the Scripture by phrases such as madness, confusion, an anxious mind, a despairing heart, constant suspense, dread and terror (Deut. 28: 20, 28,34,65 and 66). Mental and emotional breakdown cause people to lose control over their own thoughts and emotions and reactions. Such people may be haunted by an inner voice telling them to say, think or do weird things. Usually victims of the curse have a hint that things are not alright, but they are reluctant to acknowledge their problems for fear of being labelled insane.
*Repeated or chronic illness —Deuteronomy 28 mentions numerous conditions including wasting disease, fever and inflammation, severe and lingering illnesses and every kind of sickness (verses 22, 27, 35, 59 and 61). This list does not necessarily indicate that every form of sickness and disease is the direct result of a curse. But key words like incurable, extraordinary, dreaded, prolonged and lingering are warning signals. A lack of clear medical diagnosis, especially when these things run in families, would indicate the presence of a curse.
* Barrenness, repeated miscarriages and related female problems — The key phrase is Deuteronomy 28:18, which reads: “The fruit of your womb will be cursed.” This curse may affect any of the reproductive organs or functions. Female problems include the inability to conceive, a tendency to miscarry, irregular and debilitating menstruation. Often all the women in a family may be afflicted with problems of this kind.
* Marriage breakdown and alienation in families — Deuteronomy 28:41 says: “You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity.” Many parents have experienced this curse when their sons and daughters devoted to drugs, drunkenness, promiscuous sex, satanic music, and every form of the occult. Alienation is what happens between husbands and wives, parents and children, brothers and sisters and all others who should be united by the bonds of family. The enemy’s goal is destruction of the family.
*Our keynote scripture Deuteronomy 28, has this to say concerning financial and material curses: “Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed” (verse 17) and “You will be unsuccessful in everything you” (verse 29). Author Derek Prince wrote: “Many people experience a temporary financial shortage at points in their lives. When insufficiency becomes a chronic condition, oppressing and enslaving, and when the best intentioned efforts yield no solution, then that almost certainly indicates a curse at work. Certainly God has great compassion on the poor, and Christians should also be compassionate and sacrificial on behalf of the poor. But scripture never suggests that God inflicts poverty as a blessing upon his believing people.”
*Frequent unnatural accidents even if the other people are at fault may indicate a curse. Tripping up, or making rash, unpremeditated moves most frequently may indicate that one has a curse of being prone to accidents. Deuteronomy 28:29 reveals this curse, “at midday you will grope about like a blind man in the dark”. There will be an invisible, malicious force working against accident-prone people.
* Unnatural deaths in a family or tribe are a sure indicator of an umbrella curse on that family tree. In most cases people who are affected by this type of curse experience evil forebodings. They usually sense something dark and evil in the road ahead but they just do not know how to avoid it. Jesus said that Satan is a murderer (John 8:44), so the spirit of death can drive a person to suicide or untimely death.
