MANCHESTER United striker Wayne Rooney says he wasn’t aware of his record-breaking feat at Anfield, insisting he was merely pleased with his side’s win over fierce rivals Liverpool.

The Reds skipper smashed home a 78th minute volley to score his first goal at Liverpool since 2005 as he became the all-time record holder for most Premier league goals scored at a single club with 176, passing Thierry henry’s total of 175 for Arsenal.

Yet the 30-year-old, in an interview with Sky Sport after the game, said he didn’t even know he had just made history.

“To be honest, I didn’t know about that record. Obviously it is great to have records but I don’t think it will beat the feeling I have now,” he said.

“I think everyone knows the importance of this game regardless of positions; we could be top or second from bottom. It’s a massive game for both football clubs and the fans.

“It was a great victory and three points, which we needed to keep up the good start to the year.”

Rooney was especially pleased to have ended his ten-year drought at Anfield.

“To score the winning goal at Anfield, it’s been a long time since that happened for me, since my first years here, so I’ll be selfish today and enjoy that one the most,” he said.
