Barcelona striker Luis Suarez honoured to outshine Ronaldo
Luis Suarez says he is honoured to have scored more goals in a season for Barcelona than Brazilian legend Ronaldo ever managed.
Suarez’s four-goal haul in the 8-0 rout of Deportivo La Coruna on Wednesday took his tally to 49 for the club in 2015/16.
The retired Ronaldo hit 48 goals for the Catalans in 1996/97.
“It is a privilege and an honour to outscore Ronaldo because of what that means and what a great player he was,” Suarez said. “I enjoy spending every day in the best team in the world, and it is an honour to have surpassed one of the footballing greats.”
The Uruguay international is now likely to become the first player at Camp Nou to outscore Lionel Messi in a single campaign since Samuel Eto’o achieved the feat in 2007/08. Messi has plundered 40 goals in all competitions this season for the La Liga leaders.
Suarez, however, brushed off such an achievement, saying: “It is of course impossible to beat Messi’s records.”
