THE Minister of Sports and Recreation Makhosini Hlongwane on Thursday officially launched the WBC Championship sponsorship package of Zimbabwe’s celebrated boxing icon, Charles Manyuchi at Rainbow Towers in Harare.

Manyuchi, who became the WORLD Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Champion in May this year when he defeated Russian Dmitry Mikhaylenko in his own backyard, will be fighting at home for the first time in defence of an international title in honour of President Robert Mugabe.

Manyuchi started his professional boxing career on 2009 winning his debut against Isaac Phonkeni which was a local bout on 2013. Charles Manyuchi challenged for the ABU title held by Patrice Toke of Burkina Faso winning thw belt on a technical knockout.

He then challenged Patrick Alloey of Ghana for the vacant then World Boxing Council International Welterweight Title winning it again by a technical knockout. Manyuchi went on to defend the title against Devis Caceres of Columbia and again in Italy against Gianlucca Frezza. Charles reigned supreme against all odds.

The big event pitting Manyuchi and Frenchman Damien Martin is scheduled on the14th of October at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).

In his Sponsorship launch speech, the Minister said the sport industry does not operate as an enclave but relies upon support from the corporate world.
