Chidzonga tight-lipped over US$300 000 expenditure
MUTARE — Munya Chidzonga, ex-Big Brother Africa All-Stars finalist, has insisted on keeping a tight lid on the usage of the US$300 000 handed over to him by the business community after he failed to clinch the 2010 BBA US$200 000 award.
Many Zimbabweans are eager to know whether the money was invested wisely or misused. However, Munya kept his cards close to his chest when questioned over the issue. “Firstly, I keep my finances to myself,” he said.
Pressed to shed light on whether the generous gesture was put to good use or not, the Diamond Boy, as Munya is commonly referred to, said the money was well spent. “I invested some of the money to kickstart my projects, some of which I am working on now. But I can’t pre-empty now. I think I will be in a better position to reveal much about it by end of this year,” said Munya.
The Diamond Boy was given the token of appreciation by the business community after his widely disputed failure to clinch the BBA US$200 000 cash prize despite being Africa’s favourite four years ago. The money which was put together by local businessmen including Phillip Chiyangwa, was presented to him by President Robert Mugabe at the state house, which sparked speculation on his relations with ZANU-PF.
However, little is known on how the two time reality television show contender spent the life-changing amount. Information gathered indicate that Munya allegedly paid a US$30,000 tithe to his church, and poured an undisclosed amount to produce and market the movie — Lobola, which he featured in.
It is also understood that he launched a clothing line called Diamond Boy. It comprises of Diamond Boy, Diamond Girl and Junior Diamond but little is known over the viability of the projects.
Munya has also said that he established his own film production company as he has been heavily involved in the industry. He has since featured in various notable movie productions such as Lobola, The Gentleman and Something Nice From London.
