Christians are not orphans

Christ’s prediction of his return to heaven instilled fear into His disciples’ tender hearts. The reason for their fearfulness was obvious. They had known the physical presence of Jesus Christ to give hope to the hopeless, to supply the acute needs of individuals and multitudes, to heal the sick and set the captives free and to reveal the mysteries and secrets of the kingdom of heaven. Moreover, Christ’s presence had served as their anchor and preservation from all harm of the devil. He was their champion, their boss, their master, their friend and leader in the work of the ministry. Being with Christ had given their lives a reason and meaning for existence. They had seen Him do miracles. They had called to Him for help and deliverance in times of trouble. They had become too dependent on Him to live life without Him. In short, they had tasted the good life of having everything supplied and every conflict resolved in the physical presence of Christ Jesus.
Thus perceiving their inner turmoil in the prospect of being left alone, in a world full of trials and sorrows, Christ assured and comforted them with these words, “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever. The Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you” (John 14:16-18). Christ even said that it was better for Him to go so that the Holy Spirit would come. In other words, His physical presence was good but the indwelling of the Holy Spirit was better as He would not be limited by space and time. The Holy Spirit would take up residence in every believer and would continue Christ’s work of comforting the hurting world without any limitations of the physical body.
Every Christian must settle this truth in his or her heart once and for all, that the Holy Spirit is Jesus Christ in the spirit form. Thus all the comforting works and words Christ did and said when he was here in the physical form, the blessed Holy Spirit continues to do and say. He is with us and in us to love us, care for us and to offer us friendship and fellowship in the order of Jesus Christ. A true Christian will never be an orphan – left alone, helpless and hopeless and without love or care.
Understanding this truth will cause us to be bold, hopeful and confident in the face of trouble, trials and sorrows of this world knowing that Christ Jesus, who overcame the world, is in us today in the form of the Holy Spirit to minister all comfort to us and to make us truly more than conquerors. We will not need to be troubled in heart, anxious about tomorrow or fearful of evil because the Holy Spirit, God in us, will never leave us nor forsake us. We have a loving and caring parent in the indwelling Holy Spirit, hence it matters little whether our physical parents die or trouble and trials befall us. The Holy Spirit is in us to minister hope, love and good things to us in the same way Jesus of Nazareth went about doing good and healing all those who were oppressed of the devil (Acts 10:38).
An orphan in the physical sense refers to a child whose  parents are both dead and is therefore left without love and care of dear and responsible parents. In the spiritual sense, an orphan is anyone who fits the description in Ephesians 2:12, “That at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.” But once one is truly born again and masters this truth of the indwelling Holy Spirit, that one will never be an orphan, both in the physical and spiritual senses, because the Holy Spirit will be with Him or her forever  to minister hope and comfort.
Through the intimations, leadings, directings and promptings of the indwelling Holy Spirit, we are enabled to foresee evil before it befalls us, and we are delivered and preserved from all harm. It is through the comforting power of the Holy Spirit that death is swallowed up in victory, bereavement is packed with hope, and the word of God is made alive and quick in our lives.
As Christians we need to stop mourning the passion of Christ and celebrate Pentecost, the coming of the blessed Spirit. Once your day of Pentecost comes, you will know that orphans are only found in the world and not in Christ. However, we will benefit more fully from the comforting ministry of the Holy Spirit if we learn to yield ourselves like a uniform and be clothed by the Spirit of God, allowing Him to direct and control our speech, thoughts, actions and movements. When we do and say things at His bidding we will not only be comforted on every side but we will ourselves become inspired and empowered to be comforters of others.
