Mohamed Salah suffering from Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi comparisons in 2018/19 season

Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah is suffering from unfair comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi after his record-breaking goalscoring exploits last season, according to a legendary Premier League striker.

Salah scored a record-breaking 34 Premier League goals last season and 44 in all competitions and immediately drew comparisons to the iconic duo for their goal-to-game ratio. His Premier League goalscoring rival, Harry Kane, managed 41 overall and picked up the 2018 FIFA World Cup Golden boot, but have looked sluggish in the early stages of the 2018/19 season.

The Egyptian, in particular, has netted only three goals in 11 games and former Reds striker Robbie Fowler feels the duo have become victims of their own success due to the media hype in England.

“The problem they have is that they both put themselves into that Messi-Ronaldo bracket by getting close to the goal-a-game level last season,” Fowler told The Mirror.

“Yet that’s unsustainable for the very best unless you play for Barcelona or Madrid, with a team on a different level to everyone else

“It will be interesting to see what Ronaldo does over the course of a season now he’s at Juve. I suspect it won’t be a goal a game and not just because he’s getting older.

The former Manchester City striker has expressed his confidence in Salah’s ability to keep scoring goals for the Reds pointing out that it doesn’t make him worse if he scores less goals than last year.

“I’m not saying it’s a one-off, but, generally speaking, I just don’t think you should be comparing anyone to those two.

“Salah will get goals this season. But if he doesn’t get 45, then it doesn’t mean he’s a worse player, just that things have levelled off. Same with Kane.” – kickoff.com
