Cristiano Ronaldo: Bayern Munich President makes bold transfer statement over Juventus superstar

THE President of Bayern Munich has explained why they opted not to sign Cristiano Ronaldo before his Serie A record switch to champions Juventus.

Despite winning the league for a record seventh consecutive season, Juve pushed aggressively in the transfer market to land the five-time Ballon d’Or winner from Real Madrid.

Cited as the final piece of the jig-saw to add the firepower required to win the UEFA Champions League, the move marked an iconic moment for not just the Bianconeri but the resurgent Italian top-flight as a whole.

While there were reservations of the 33-year-old possibly being beyond his peak after forging a landmark as the all-time record scorer at Real over a spell that lasted just one year short of a decade, hisearly season exploits of 2018/19 have silenced even his harshest detractors.

However, Bayern Munich President Uli Hoeness, who hasn’t been short of controversial statements in recent months has explained why the baulked at the idea of acquiring the Portugal captain.

“We would have paid that amount for him with our eyes closed if he was 24 years old but he’s 33,” he told Bild.

His opinion slightly suggests that Bayern felt the powers of the legendary attacker is on the wane, but his sentiments are clearly not shared by Juve manager Massimo Allegri.

The Italian tactician believes Ronaldo’s prolific form this season proves he still has the drive and hunger to achieve more, especially after losing out on the Golden Ball to his former teammate Luka Modric on Monday.

“He’ll want to do better and win his sixth ballon d’Or with Juventus next year,” Allegri said, as per The Express. “CR7 is a model to all footballers.

“Even with all his success and at 33 years old he still focuses on each detail. His talents alone don’t account for him being on his level.

“He is a likeable guy and he has joined into the group well, and raised our level of professionalism, which is always a part of Juventus.”

Ronaldo and the Old Lady’s next action sees them pitted in a heated league encounter against Inter Milan on Friday. – kick.com
