Game Of Thrones creator hints about ending of his books

Game Of Thrones creator George RR Martin has given hints about the ending of his books after seeing the hit series come to an end – and also said he suspects we have “not seen the last of Westeros” on TV.

The author wrote about the finale of the epic fantasy series on his blog, saying it had been “a wild ride” since his first meeting with the show’s writers David Benioff and DB Weiss more than a decade ago.

He is still writing the final instalments of his series of books, A Song Of Ice And Fire, with Game Of Thrones the show having overtaken the published novels – the last one released in 2011 – in its sixth season.

Martin helped producers as they continued the story on screen and there has been much speculation about whether the ending will turn out to be true to his original vision.

In his blog post, Martin promised the sixth and seventh books, The Winds Of Winter and A Dream Of Spring, “will be done”.

“I’m writing,” he said. “Winter is coming, I told you, long ago… and so it is.

Game of Thrones: George RR Martin hints at ending for his books after TV finale

“The Winds Of Winter is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done. I won’t say when, I’ve tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself… but I will finish it, and then will come A Dream Of Spring.

“How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different?

“Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes.”

Martin said the question of which, book or TV show, would have the “real ending” was “silly”.

“How about this. I’ll write it. You read it. Then everyone can make up their own mind, and argue about it on the internet.”

The final episode of season eight divided fans, with many happy with the way the story ended for some of its main protagonists.Martin said it was “hard to believe it is over”.

He continued: “Parting is such sweet sorrow, the Bard wrote. In the weeks and months to come, I may post about some of my favourite moments from the making of this show… now and again, when I am feeling nostalgic… but just now, there are so many memories, and no time to do them all justice.”

Martin said that the finale “was an ending, but it was also a beginning”, with all of the people involved working on new projects.

“I suspect that you have not seen the last of Westeros on your television sets either, but I guess that all depends on how some of these successor shows turn out,” he added.

Plans for a prequel were announced in 2018, but the final episode also left many of the characters’ stories open for further potential spin-offs. – news.sky.com
