Glitz, glamour at AMVCA
The ceremony was televised across Africa with Nigeria’s IK co-hosting the ceremony with Zimbabwe’s very own Vimbai Mutinhiri. ‘Miss Vimbai’ who was exceptionally exuberant and confident made us proud.
Organisers of the event deserve an ‘A plus’for magnificent planning. The deco was truly African themed with homegrown rich and bold colours interplaying. I had the feeling of being transported to a magical place of beauty
Legendary Nigerian Afro-beat king, Femi Kuti, who was the opening act joined by his full band, wowed guests with an amazing performance of Bang bang. Other enthralling performances came from African groups and artists such as Banky W and Tiwa Savage who gave a tribute to the late singer and former Big Brother Africa housemate, Goldie Harvey.
Big individual winners on the night included Nigeria’s Mercy Johnson (Best Actress — Comedy) for Dumebi — The Dirty Girl, Ghanaian Jackie Appiah (Best Actress — Drama) for Perfect Picture, Nigeria’s Hafiz Oyetoro (Best Actor — Comedy) for House a Part and his compatriot OC Ukeje (Best Actor — Drama) for Two Brides and a Baby. Category wins for Best Supporting Cast in a Drama went to Uganda’s Matthew Nabwiso for A Good Catholic Girl and Kenya’s Maureen Koech for Lies That Bind. The prestigious award for Best Director went to Akin Omotoso for Man on Ground. The announcement of the winners of the hotly-contested Best Movie Overall and Best Television categories produced the biggest ovation of the night, with Otelo Burning and The XYZ Show scooping top honours.
The main highlight of the ceremony was the showcasing — on the red carpet by Nigeria’s who is who in the entertainment industry — of exquisite couture, with everyone present looking superbly dazzling. The event proved that Africa has indeed come of age as evidenced by the various designs by versatile upcoming young enterprising Nigerian designers
Of note was actress Genevieve Nnaji, who even though she did not walk away with an award, no doubt stole the show with a stunningly sexy and elegant yellow masterpiece designed locally. The men were not to be outdone with Desmond Elliot looking really fine in a well-tailored suit. Finesse at its best!
The AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards ceremony will indeed be remembered for the magnificent display of contemporary African designs.
One only hopes the next edition will see other African countries getting recognition.
