Let the Holy Spirit be sovereign
Resolving Personal & Spiritual Conflicts
GALATIANS 5:25 The Spirit has given us life; he must also control our lives. When the Spirit of God is in control of our lives, victory will be our daily experience. We will enjoy peace in the midst of storms and unspeakable joy will be the hallmark of our lifestyle. On the contrary, if we let the flesh or our human nature which is independent of God rule our lives we will become weak and helpless in our Christian walk. The devil, the world and the flesh will defeat us and spoil our Christian distinctive.
According to the opening scripture, if we let the Holy Spirit be sovereign or master in our lives we will always win, succeed and overcome all obstacles to the accomplishment of God’s plans.
Totally yielding to the divine control of God’s Spirit means that we experience supernatural happenings that are mysterious and confounding to the world. It also means a narrowing of our interests in the things of the world and a broadening of our affections in the things of God. But the life controlled, governed, directed and guided by the Holy Spirit is the best and sweetest kind of life.
It gives us a foretaste and a growing hunger for the heavenly life. Smith Wigglesworth lived a Holy Spirit-led kind of life and in testimony to the goodness of such a life he said that he would rather have the Holy Spirit upon his life for five minutes than to have a million dollars.
Simon the sorcerer had great magical power and everyone in his society feared him. But when he witnessed the greatness and attractiveness of the Spirit’s exploits through Peter, he offered money in exchange for that power. Peter refused the money because he had tasted the goodness of the Holy Spirit in his life and ministry.
The Holy Spirit gives a supernatural spiritual dynamic to our lives and ministry that cannot be found anywhere else. He energises us with a strength that the devil cannot match. He so invigorates and vitalises us inside that we have a competitive edge over temptations and troubles of life.
However, the devil, the world and the flesh are relentless and persistent in fighting to quench the force and activity of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The presence and power of the Holy Spirit in your life is that dynamic that causes sinners to be uncomfortable with you.
Because they cannot explain why it is so in your life seeing that you have nothing glamorous about your life naturally, they can hate you, persecute you and even shun you. Do not worry, the mystery is in the power you have on the inside of you. But you need to diligently keep that power inside you because once you succumb to temptations you will become like salt that has lost its flavour and isno longer useful for anything. The life and ministry of the biblical Samson teach us many important truths about the powerfulness of the Spirit of God and the powerlessness of our human nature in our walk with God and in resisting temptations. Samson the judge was born a Nazarite. According to Numbers 6:1-8, a Nazarite was a person who showed devotion to God by taking vows not to drink wine or beer or cut his hair or touch corpses. In other words, he was set apart to serve God’s purposes in his generation.
He was holy and anointed to effect God’s will. And as long as he conducted his lifestyle according to God’s plan he was powerful and did great exploits by the power of God’s spirit resting upon him. For instance he pulled up a city gate with all its doors, posts, lock and all. He single-handedly killed one thousand Philistines with a jawbone.
One time, he caught three hundred foxes, set fire on their tails and directed them to burn the cornfields of the Philistines. Another time, he tore a lion apart as if he were killing a goat. Samson did great feats in his time that cannot be explained without making reference to the supernatural power of God working through him. There is a statement that is repeated in the biblical account of Samson that shows us that his power was from the Spirit of God.
The statement is found in Judges 14:6; 14:19 and 15:14 and it reads, “Suddenly the power of the Lord made him strong.” This is reference to the Spirit of God coming upon Samson and enabling him to do exploits. But the persistence of temptation to reveal his secret finally wearied him and he disclosed the way of how to make him weak and helpless like anybody else. Since then, he became ordinary because the Spirit of God left him. Instead of ruling in the midst of his enemies, he became their slave. How worthless and powerless believers are without the Holy Spirit being sovereign in our lives!
