horse racingLEADING horse trainer, Lisa Harris, has once again taken control of Borrowdale Park race course after bagging close to a quarter of a million dollars in stake earnings in only 11 months. According to statistics of performance released recently by the Mashonaland Turf Club, Harris who started training race horses in 2002 and has been a champion trainer for six years, accumulated a total of US$245 671 in stake money after producing 30 winners in the season gone by.

She was champion trainer in 2004 and 2005 but missed in 2006. Harris was also champion trainer from 2008 to 2010 before bouncing back last season. Harris, who takes charge of Zimbabwean bred horses Forty One, Castle Hill and Pecadillo and Lucky Sam who won the Bloodstock SA, as well as the Republic Cup and also came second in the OK Grand Challenge, had 30 horses in second place with 28 third placings and 32 horses in fourth place. All in all she had a 13 percent winning rate and a 38 percentage in placings.

In fact, it was double celebration for the Harris stable after yard jockey Quinton Riddle also took the top jockey tag, just ahead of former champion jockey Sherman Brown from the Kirk Swanson stable. Although Harris finally took the champion trainer mantle, it was, however, a very close contest with Swanson who chipped in with some impressive credentials with a 14 percent winning form but lost out in the placings where he was on 31 percent.

Swanson who has the seven year old Captain Tiger under his stable has an equally impressive record of 36 wins and 34 second placings. He boasts of 27 horses in third position and 18 in fourth place. All in all, Swanson had a total stake money of US$243 054 Amy Bronkhorst who trains Equina, the star of the show at Borrowdale Park race course this season was in fourth position, just behind Gokhan Terzi.

What a debut training season as she accumulated a total of US$186 934. Of her 19 wins, three of them were for Equina who won the OK Grand Challenge, the Castle Tankard and the Champions Fillies Stakes and was also second in the Republic Cup. – Michael Kariati
