Lobola on DVD
The producers of the film indicated that 100 000 copies of the DVD will hit the shelves of selected shops and outlets throughout the country this Friday including Spar Stores and Rainbow cinemas.
Lobola is a comic tale of clashes that emanate when emerging cosmopolitan customs meet with the traditional set up of lobola (bride price). The hilarious film finds Sean Muza, played by Munya Chidzonga — the Big Brother Africa reality TV show star — who, together with his two brothers, Curtis (Sean Ray) and T-Bone (Tonderai Hakuna) and their drunkard Sekuru (uncle) (Anthony Tongani), planning to pay lobola, in a day, but with no clue how to go about it. It also features seasoned actors and actresses, Dalma Chiwereva, Pretty Xaba and Joe Pike.
The film is a reflection of the Zimbabwean society today in light of the challenges that Zimbabweans living abroad for long periods of time face in adopting deep-rooted traditional customs. In the end, the narrative provokes conversation towards bridging these gaps and encouraging tolerance towards cultural dynamics.
The producers indicated at a press conference held on Tuesday that the film had hit a record as the highest grossing local film since independence, but declined to give figures.
Lobola was directed by Joe Njagu and brought together four local film companies, namely, Ivory Pictures, Mighty Movies, The Decent Arthouse and Fireside Stories. It premiered in December last year.
Copies of the film will also be sent to South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria among other African countries. Each DVD will be going for a modest US$3.
