CHAMPIONS Leicester City were on the receiving end of a clinical Manchester United display following their 4-1 thumping at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

On the back of two successive losses, United boss decided to drop Wayne Rooney for the clash, with Ander Herrera joining Juan Mata and Paul Pogba in the centre of the park.

Rooney’s omission proved a masterstroke with the Red Devils putting their front foot forward, opening the scoring through a Chris Smalling header on 20 minutes.

Neat interplay involving a powerful forward run by Mata minutes later resulted in a left-footed rocket by the Spaniard to double the hosts’ lead, before the energetic midfielder turned provider, teeing up Marcus Rashford after a quick-thinking short corner made it 3-0.

Star signing Paul Pogba got his name on the scoresheet for the first time in United colours after heading home a corner – the third goal conceded by the Foxes from a set-piece – to make it 4-0 after 42 minutes, all but sealing the result before half-time.

Mourinho’s men eased off the in the second period, but failed to keep a clean sheet after Demarai Gray cut inside and struck an unstoppable shot past David de Gea on the hour mark to restore an inch of pride for the reigning champions.

That was as good as it got however, as United ended their two-game winless streak to temporarily boost themselves up to third in the standings, with Leicester in 13th. Kickoff.com
