Premier League, La Liga and Serie A preview, 3-6 May 2024

LIVERPOOL fight for the title, Girona’s Catalan derby against Barcelona and a potential thriller between Roma and Juventus are the highlights for the Premier League, La Liga and Serie A, with matches scheduled to be played from Friday 3 to Monday 6 May 2024.

The meeting of Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur will be the headline Premier League fixture for the weekend, with the Reds pushing hard in their bid to win the title, while Spurs are chasing qualification for European football.

With the pressure of the season conclusion mounting, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is adamant that his side has the nous and character for a glorious finish: “We talk and remind the boys of the things we are really good at because we are really good.

“That’s the reason we are where we are, we just have to show that every day and that’s now the situation. That’s not new, for some the situation might be a bit new but that’s when the more experienced players have to step in and lead the pack on the pitch.”

The weekend’s action opens on Friday night with a relegation six-pointer between Luton Town and Everton at Kenilworth Road, with Toffees manager Sean Dyche urging his side to shrug off recent points penalties (for breaching profit and sustainability rules) and fight for their place in the English top flight.

“What’s done is done. We’ve just got to stay in line, stay connected, and take on the next challenge. The club’s had a few knocks recently, let’s all pull together and get it done,” said Dyche.

Saturday opens with Arsenal chasing three key points in the title race when they host Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium, while Manchester City will have their chance for a response in the evening kick-off when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium.

Sunday, prior to the Liverpool v Tottenham match, offers up a London derby between Chelsea and West Ham United at Stamford Bridge, while the round-closer arrives on Monday night and pits Crystal Palace against Manchester United at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles could well have Marc Guehi back from a knee injury, with the defender hoping to return and make a late bid to be included in the England squad for Euro 2024: “That’s the plan,” said the Abidjan-born centre-back. “Hopefully I can come back and help the lads in the last few games. I’m just waiting to get back in and play.”

SuperSport is the only place where you can get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where Girona hosting Barcelona at Estadi Municipal de Montilivi for a Catalan derby on the early evening of Saturday 4 May is the pick of matches.

Girona are chasing a ‘double’ over the Blaugrana following a stunning 4-2 win at the Lluis Company’s Olympic Stadium back in October 2023, but Blanquivermells manager Michel Sanchez insists that this season has already been a huge success for his side regardless of how they round out the campaign in the coming weeks.

“It’s a reality of Girona Football Club’s great project,” said Michel. “I’m in this project and for me it’s a spectacular thing. It’s a reality now and now the dream is to play in the Champions League. I hope to achieve that at the end of the season. It’s true that I arrived three years ago and to be in Europe next year is an incredible feat for us. It talks about how well the club does things. We have to continue in the same way.”

Real Madrid will also be in action on Saturday, as they host Cadiz in the afternoon, while the late kick-off of the day features Mallorca looking to continue their fine campaign and claim the scalp of Atletico Madrid, who will make the hop to the beautiful island to take on Los Piratas.

“The best way to face [Atletico] is to be organised and have personality with very clear ideas and not failing when you have the opportunity,” said Mallorca coach Javier Aguirre. “I am not going to discover anything new if I say that they are better and favourites, but in our stadium with our people and their support, with the team connected as it has been in recent weeks, I have hope and faith that something good can come out of the game.”

A busy Sunday is headlined by Sevilla hosting Granada, with the hosts at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan looking to ensure that they end a difficult season on a high, while Villarreal (away to Celta Vigo), Valencia (at home to Alaves) and Real Betis (away to Osasuna) are teams to keep an eye out for.

The meeting of Roma and Juventus is one of the highlights of any Serie A round, with their clash at the Stadio Olimpico this time around giving the Giallorossi the chance to make a further statement of their progress under club legend Daniele De Rossi, while the Bianconeri are looking for a strong end to a season in which they have failed to live up to their hopes of challenging for the Scudetto.

Italian coaching legend Fabio Capello believes De Rossi has done a superb job since succeeding Jose Mourinho at the helm of Roma: “De Rossi was a midfielder with superior tactical intelligence, and his results on the bench [as a coach] are not surprising.”

He added, “De Rossi is pragmatic, his Roma side play more games inside a game […] It’s clear that he’s very smart tactically and that he studies [the opposition]. I think Daniele was excellent in giving confidence, involving all the players and being credible. Of course, he was lucky to have a soft start in terms of opponents, but he’s built the group’s strength with those convincing results, becoming the leader.”

Elsewhere, Internazionale will look for another three points in their imperious season when they visit Sassuolo, while cross-city rivals AC Milan will welcome Genoa to the iconic San Siro – with manager Stefano Pioli expressing his happiness with the performances of ‘Captain America’ Christian Pulisic.

“He doesn’t talk very much, but it’s the attitude that shines through from a person. His attitude is fantastic, he is an exemplary professional and hard worker who will help the team to get stronger,” said Pioli.

Bologna’s quest to qualify for European competition sees them tackle Torino away from home, Napoli will face a potential banana skin away to Udinese, and Lazio’s progress under new coach Igor Tudor will be tested by Monza.

“It is now up to us to bring the fans back over to our side,” said Tudor. “I am taking it one game at a time […]. We need to keep going, improve and see where it takes us.”
