Rapper DMX has recovered after being found unconscious outside a hotel in New York on Monday, his lawyer says.

Officers were called to the Ramada Inn where they found a 45-year-old man with no pulse in the car park.

Yonkers Police Detective Lieutenant Patrick McCormack said privacy laws prevented him from identifying the man but that he was given medication by paramedics to reverse the effects of opioid drugs.

CPR was performed on the man and he was given oxygen on the way to hospital.

DMX’s lawyer, Murray Richman, said he did not know why the artist had stopped breathing but revealed he suffers from asthma.

However, a source told Fox News the cause may have been a drug overdose.

Mr Richman said DMX has now left hospital.

The star has had a number of legal issues in the past few years and was sentenced to six months in prison last July after failing to pay child support.

DMX has previously served time in jail for drug offences and in July 2013 he filed for bankruptcy after falling into debt.

He has sold over 30 million records worldwide, with his 2003 Grand Champ album the most successful in the UK. Sky.com
