SCOUTS Association of Zimbabwe on Sunday had a cooking competition dubbed backwoods cooking held at Cleveland Dam. The event saw 350 scouts from 21 different schools and age groups ranging from six years to 26 years old are participating.

The groups of scouts range from the age six to eight years named the Beaver scouts, followed by the Cub scouts aged eight to eleven years old and those the ones learning to use fire, followed by Scouts eleven and half years to eighteen years old, and lastly 18 years to 26 years old.

Running under the theme, ‘Together as one’ the competition’s aim is to promote Unity, togetherness and  fellowship among the scouts since it unites students from different religions, backgrounds and schools with different beliefs.

“Backwoods cooking is cooking without pots, we want to build them and teach them to be good citizens, and also to widen the scouts’ brains,” said Bright Nyabadza the scouts’ Provincial Commissioner Harare Province.

“The scouts prepare, cook and eat a three course meal using equipment that might be found in the average `camp kitchen’,” he added.

Commenting on the competition Scouts’ Assistant Provincial Commissioner Sydney Mayerwa said: “It’s not just about the cooking, presentation but also table decorations and cleanliness is important too. Each team provides the judges with a small `taster plate’ of their meal,”

Mayerwa also added that the winning team will be presented with the cooking competition trophy, as well as having the opportunity to represent the District at the County cooking competition.
