Social Media Is Still Blocked, Let’s Keep Using VPNs

So yes the internet has been switched back on again for the second time. Again this time without open access to social media.

Econet, the country’s biggest mobile network operator has just sent a message informing subscribers of this development. Says the message:

Dear valued customer
At 15:55 on 18/01/:2019, we got a further instruction under the ministerial directive to open access to the generality of Internet services except for specified social media applications.

This means the only way to keep enjoying WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter and other blocked sites and apps is to use a VPN as we started advising on Monday. Not all VPNs are working though as some have been blocked too but we must repeat there is no way the service providers can block all VPNs. We ourselves are using VPNs to send updates to social media.

It’s funny how Zimbabweans now know an extra piece of tech jargon like this. On Wednesday there were reports that searches for VPN from Zimbabwe grew by more than 1500%.

If VPNs won’t work for you, consider convincing your whole network to migrate to Telegram or even Viber as alternatives to WhatsApp.

Here’s how to keep using social media via VPN
