The lad who won the day for Zim
He was born in Harare on July 11 1987 at the Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Hospital at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
He attended St Michael’s and Hartman House for his primary education and went to St George’s College in Harare for his secondary and high school. He finished school in 2005.
While at St George’s, he won the Victor la Dorum award for swimming though he no longer takes it any seriously.
After school, he applied to do a private pilot’s license (PPL) with Guthrie Aviation at Prince Charles Airport in Mt Hampden. On completing this he went to Wings Gold Coast, Australia, to do a commercial pilot’s license training and returned home in January this year.
His mother, Gillian, says that before going to Australia, Wendall suffered a very sad moment – that is when his dog of 17 years, Dinkie, was put down in 2009.
“Wendall was very upset for weeks and vowed never to own another dog. On his departure to Gold Coast, he gave me a gift of an African grey parrot called Sox to keep me company, but it clearly was his pet as the parrot only mimicked him and William (Wendall’s brother),” she said.
He decided to join the Big Brother Africa reality show as he felt he could represent Zimbabwe and put “a positive light on our country showing our new youth and diversity”.
Achieving a commercial pilot’s license would be one of his best personal moments as he has always dreamt of being a pilot since he was a toddler.
During his training he used Cessna 150 and 152 and enjoyed solo flights where he flew to various tourist resorts with his pals to gain hours.
As a little boy, Wendall was very close to all his siblings and mother.
Likes: A good time with mates anywhere outdoors, really enjoys going to Kariba – going fishing on a houseboat. He enjoys the beautiful places around Zimbabwe such as Nyanga, Lake Chivero, Kariba, Vic Falls and even Gletwyn Dam just for a day out in the sun.
Movies: Enjoys horrors and comedies among his favourites are all the scary movies of the Wayans brothers.
Television: Loves to watch Top Gear, Formula 1, Two and a Half Men, Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and Scare Tactics.
Food: Likes wraps, braais, and pizza every now and again. If it’s spicy he will eat it.
Sports: Water polo, tubing, skiing and swimming. He also enjoys rugby and Formula 1 and will be disappointed if the Chiefs do well in the Super 15 as he has hardly watched them play.
Dislikes: Disloyal people. He believes in loyalty and honour towards family and friends. If you are a friend you are as good as family.
“Wendall doesn’t like arguments and prefers to try to be as happy as he can on any day.
“He is a pleasant well-mannered young man, but doesn’t let people push him around unnecessarily,” his mother said.
The last thing, perhaps, that most would be asking at this moment – mainly those of the fairer sex – is: Is the lad seeing or dating anyone? Does he have a fiancée waiting to be walked down the aisle soon? Is he engaged, etc?
Well, the chap is still free!
