The power of a king (2)
Resolving Personal & Spiritual Conflicts
Proverbs 21:1 The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, as the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes. All the emphasis of last week’s instalment on the executive and sovereign powers of earthly kings was leading to this one point: If earthly kings have such absolute powers as to vent wrath and to show favour at will, how much more power then does the Heavenly King, Jesus Christ, has?
The King of glory has absolute and ultimate power and authority in both heaven and earth. Matthew 28:18 clearly reveals this truth, “And Jesus Christ came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” Christ’s kingship powers affect the whole universe, that is heaven and earth or both spiritual and natural kingdoms. Though Christ kingship is mainly spiritual, it holds sway over all the events of this world. Remember, the spiritual always rules the natural. Christ is the sovereign King in heaven and on earth and all His plans are accomplished despite the appearances of things on earth.
The vastness and extent of Christ’s kingly rule is well described by the prophet Daniel as an everlasting, glorious and indestructible dominion (Daniel 7:4). Everything and everyone on earth is a servant of God in one way or the other, directly or indirectly, willingly or grudgingly and consciously or unconsciously. How beneficial and joyous it is to serve him willingly and cheerfully than to be used unknowingly?
The opening scripture shows that Christ is the King of kings and Lord of lords. He is the suzerain king and all earthly kings are his vassal kings. While they bear rule over their subjects, He controls their hearts in His hand and causes them to do what pleases Him. What a king we have in Jesus, whose kingship is invisible yet so tremendous in its effects on the earth! All wicked kings are unconsciously used of God to accomplish His sovereign will, and in the end are not only dumped but punished for their pride and arrogance in fulfilling God’s purposes.
What I want to emphasise here is that we have a humble, gracious, compassionate, and benevolent King in Jesus Christ. His kingship is more appealing in the sense that His justice is married to mercy. In fact, Scripture says that His mercy triumphs over His judgment, that is to say He shows mercy more than He vents anger. In this regard and in other aspects, He presents Himself as the king of choice; He is to be chosen and loved and accepted as everyone’s king. Now notice this, every good king or whatever good thing any king in the Bible did, was but a shadow or type of this sovereign King. That good king or that good thing done by a king was a microcosm of the macrocosm; an earthly replica of the heavenly reality. It all reflected the goodness and kindness of Christ Jesus the sovereign king.
Unlike the kingship of man, Christ’s kingship addresses the greatest need of all people under the sun, that is, the need for forgiveness. All people in all the nations share this thing in common — sinfulness. Even kings of this world find themselves in the bondage of sin. But Christ is the King who shed His blood for the salvation of people from their sins. This is a point worth shouting at the rooftops.
Let everyone everywhere, king or subject, know that the King of kings, Christ Jesus, has borne the punishment, condemnation, guilt and curse of your sins. Sometimes pastors want to hide this truth lest people will sin all they want but it is true that Christ, your benevolent King and Saviour has already take away your past sins, present sins and future sins. And on the basis of that truth you are justified.
You are declared not guilty. You are declared righteous. Oh, how free salvation is! You do not have to earn it by good works. You do not have to cry for the forgiveness of your sins. The King of glory has forgiven you the whole debt of sin. It is free. It is based on the King’s special executive powers. The King has proclaimed your emancipation 2000 years ago, why then wait to make your freedom from sin actual? Just believe and accept in your heart that truly your Shepherd-King Jesus Christ died for your sins and confess Him with your mouth that He is now your chosen and loved Lord and Saviour.
Not only does your Shepherd-King supply your spiritual needs like salvation, He can supply all your material, financial and physical needs according to His riches in glory.
If a pagan king of Babylon could show impartial kindness to a rebellious king Jehoachin by giving him a daily allowance continually all the days of his life, how much more good things can the King of kings give unto you his beloved child? It is not a question of having a supply of the whole life in store but of trusting Him daily for your daily allowances. If you trust in Him well, He cleanses you from sin and crowns you with glory and honour, He speaks to you kindly to build your self-esteem and self-value and gives your daily bread without failure. And you will say with David, ‘the Lord is my Shepherd-king and I shall not lack any good thing.’
