Unlocking the value of man

In life you find that there are things of great value, things of little value and things which are of no value. Things of great value are closely guarded, expensive to purchase and are not easy to replace once wasted. Things of little value are given little care and attention while valueless things are given no attention at all. One of the most valuable things in life is money. Our worth in life is usually rated in terms of monetary value. As you already know it is the people with a lot of money who are highly valued in our society. The Holy Book says that the wisdom of the poor is despised and that the poor are deserted by their friends because of their poverty. No other statement sums up the value of money than the one uttered by King Solomon in Ecclesiastes 10:19, “but money answereth all things.”
Money is of great value but people are of much greater value. In fact a human being is priceless, which means a person is so valuable that no price can be fixed as the best price for purchasing a person. The value of a human being is seen in the laws of the State. For example, murder of a human being has a great punishment and sentence attached to it. And there is no law which allows the sale of human beings. The value of a person in God’s sight is throughout the whole Bible. The Bible is simply an instruction manual given by God to govern the life of, and to define the purpose of, a human being. The creation account shows that God regards man as His most prized possession. Psalms 8:3-6 says, “When I consider thy heavens, the works of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and has crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands, thou hast put all things under his feet.” Right from the beginning man was given the greatest value among all creation. The Psalmist compared man with celestial bodies like the stars and the moon and he saw the insignificance of man. But when he considered the care, attention and dominion gives to man, he then realised the pre-eminence of man over all other creations.
Man is so precious in the sight of God that when he fell into sin, and lost his God-given value and became a servant of the devil, God hatched a plan to redeem him. The cost of redemption or buying back man from sin and Satan was the incorruptible, sinless and precious blood of Jesus Christ. To understand the value God attached to His son l will give you an illustration. One day I met a certain lady with twin children. She was constantly taking breaths signifying something was wrong.  I asked her what the matter was and she said that another lady had shocked her. That other lady, being barren, had offered to buy the mother of twins a decent house and a posh car in exchange for one child.
That offer came as a shock to her. Not only was the offer unacceptable but also unimaginable. She could not imagine giving away her child because of money. In poverty or in prosperity the mother pledged to keep her children under her arms. Money paled in value when a child was placed side by side with it.
The point is that if a mother of three could not part with one child because of the highest value she placed on children, how much more value did God put on His only beloved son. But the amazing thing is that despite being the only and the best son, God placed greater value on man and by giving up Jesus for our redemption.
The value of a thing is normally determined by what the purchaser is prepared to lose in order to buy it. We were to God a pearl of great value that needed to be bought and He sacrificed His best to buy us.
You would begin to rejoice and to value yourself highly if only you could perceive your value in God’s sight.
You will not let other people and circumstances cause you to feel worthless if you constantly remind yourself of the cost of your redemption.
You are God’s favourite child. It matters little how man sees you, cling to God’s portrait of you.
