Zenedine Zidane reveals Afcon 2019 pick

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane has revealed which of the 24 teams he would like to see win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 1998 FIFA World Cup winner, who is of Algerian descent, has revealed his desire to see Algeria succeed at the tournament in Egypt.

“We want to see the Algerian team playing well for the Algerian people,” Zidane said, as per beIN SPORTS.

“I want them to win the title so as to see Algerians celebrating their victory in the streets.”

Djamel Belmadi’s charges, who are appearing in their 18th edition of the African spectacle, got their Afcon campaign off to a flawless start, easing to a 2-0 victory over Kenya on Sunday.

The Desert Warriors, whose only Afcon triumph came in 1990 after they defeated Nigeria in the final on home soil, boast a relatively inexperienced squad, but will be hoping star duo Islam Slimani and Riyad Mahrez can deliver the goods for them.

Algeria’s next assignment sees them face a star-studded Senegal outfit on Thursday, before doing duty against Tanzania in their final group fixture four days later. – kickoff.com
