Zimbabwe Cricket gets financial boost
THE ailing organisation is set to receive a huge financial injection to the tune of $94 million from the International Cricket Council, SportBrief has learned.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has passed a resolution that will see Zimbabwe Cricket receiving an improved allocation of US$94 million dollars for the cycle of 2016-2023 under its revised revenue sharing model at a meeting held in Dubai recently.
The new financial structure was passed by the ICC after an outright majority voted for the motion at the board meeting.
This development means that Zimbabwe will now get a significant improvement of US$19 million more than it would have received over the eight-year ban.
While this is a much needed shot in the arm for Zim cricket, it remains yet to be seen how this will translate on the ground locally as financial issues concerning the discipline have been well documented in recent times.
Some of the countries that are set to benefit from the restructured model include India, who will receive US$293 million, England US$143 million, with the remaining seven full board members getting US$132 million each over the eight year period.
This news comes hot on the heels of confirmed reports that Zimbabwe has officially tabled in a bid to host the 2018 ICC World Cup Qualifiers with the event’s original venue, Bangladesh, likely to be changed as the country is now seemingly destined to qualify automatically for the tournament. -sportbrief.co.zw
