ECONET Wireless Zimbabwe’s Chief Operating Officer, Kezito Makuni, has left the company.

In a notice published by the listed telecommunications and technology company, Econet said Makuni – a trained telecoms engineer and business executive – was leaving the company with effect from February 28 2025 “to pursue other interests outside the company”.

The company paid tribute to Makuni, who had been with Econet for sixteen years, for playing “a key role in helping the company achieve significant milestones in its growth and digital transformation journey”.

“The Board and Management of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe express their sincere gratitude to Mr Makuni for his contributions and wish him the very best in his future endeavours,” the notice said.

Efforts to get further details on Makuni’s departure from Econet or from Makuni himself, have so far not been successful.

But well-placed sources within the company confirmed that Makuni’s departure was amicable, adding that the board and executive management had “known for months that Makuni intended to move on”.

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, one of the largest companies in the country, was founded by billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist Strive Masiyiwa.

The listed company is one of the largest counters on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange and is led by long-serving Group CEO Douglas Mboweni, who is deputised by Roy Chimanikire.

Early last year, the company announced a scheme of reconstruction involving the acquisition of fintech businesses previously under EcoCash Holdings Zimbabwe Limited. These included, among others, the EcoCash mobile money business.

The transaction, which was successfully concluded, is thought to have strengthen Econet’s market position.
