After a narrow loss to the visitors — Zimbabwe managed 291/8 in response to Sri Lanka’s 298/6 – in the first ODI on Friday where the Sean Williams-captained Chevrons were undone by Dilshan Madushanka’s final over hat-trick to lose by seven runs, the hosts will be banking on the support of the partisan home crowd to push them through to a much-needed win.

Having put on a series of disappointing performances in recent months, the Chevrons were a different proposition on Friday, going toe-to-toe with the Sri Lankans and would have gotten over the line had they managed to contain Madushanka’s late onslaught.

A win for the Chevrons today would be a big boost ahead of the upcoming T20I series against the same opponent. Williams believes the performance in the first match against Sri Lanka was near perfect.

“I think the powerplay was unbelievable for us, all chances were taken and everything went according to plan. Just towards the backend of the innings — bad decision on my part — and the one over cost us the game,” said Williams, who will be hoping for another strong performance from his side who have to prove that they can be a consistent side.

Zimbabwe ODI squad: Brian Bennett, Johnathan Campbell, Ben Curran, Brad Evans, Trevor Gwandu, Wessly Madhevere, Clive Madande, Ernest Masuku, Tony Munyonga, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Newman Nyamhuri, Sikandar Raza, Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams.
