Long live men’s skin — Clarins!
There are an amazing amount of skin care companies whose goals are to keep men looking their best (and youngest). It’s time you started paying better attention to your skin, but that doesn’t mean that you are going to have to make a lot of changes in your routine.
Switch out some of your current products with some men’s skin care products that I’m recommending and you’re well on your way to a younger looking healthy face. Avoid embarrassing blemishes and other unsightly men’s skin problems by using these solutions to common issues men have with their most public feature.
Today’s men are exfoliating, masking and moisturising with a host of For Him formulas, as stunning as his diamante ear stud, a guy’s impeccable skin can get girls green with envy, questioning his new-found grooming secret. So what are beaus up to in the bathroom? It may not be a vigorous rub with soap and water, a quick shave followed by a splash of 4711 and a sweep of Brylcreem, and today’s men are exfoliating, masking and moisturising — doing pretty much the same as the fairer sex, albeit with a host of For Him formulas.
Whitening, skin lifting and even chin-shaping products are out there to cater for men’s multiple skin problems. But wouldn’t bleaching the skin undermine their machismo.
Firstly, whitening products are not about changing the colour of the skin, they help deal with dark spots and uneven skin tone, common skin concerns for men whose lifestyles take them out in the sun, whether for work or for sports. Using sunblock helps protect their skin from UV radiation, and now men are adopting whitening products to minimise skin pigmentation to maintain good looking skin.
Good looks start with good skin, making men pay more attention to what they see in the mirror. Younger men may be bothered by acne and oily skin while older men may be disturbed by deepening wrinkles. Compared to women’s skin, men’s skin is thicker with more collagen, and it should take longer for signs of ageing to appear. Wrinkles, deep lines and sagging skin of a middle-aged face then may have men seeking anti-ageing skincare. Men don’t believe in miracle creams that turn back the clock to give them teenage skin. What they want is something that make wrinkles less apparent. Besides reliable eye gel and wrinkle serum, men may be adding more items for youthful grooming.
Listen, we all like to go out now and again and throw a few back. So what can you do to keep your face looking fresh even though the rest of you doesn’t feel that way?
It should be no surprise that drinking (alcoholic beverages that is) takes the moisture right out of your skin, which is why you look sallow the morning after.
One way to avoid this is to keep up on your daily skin care regime of cleansing, toning and moisturising. It will help keep your skin soft and replenished. And make sure to use a stimulating eye gel in the morning to keep the bags at bay. At least once a week use a facial scrub or exfoliant. This will slough off dead skin and help you look more radiant.
Do you know your skin?
Get a facial. Go to a reputable spa and ask the esthetician (the gal who is giving you your facial) to analyze the type of skin you have as well as the condition it is in. She will be able to make recommendations specifically suited for you. I will say that this was invaluable to me since I now have a regime that is perfectly suited for my skin type.
Do the dark circles under your eyes make you look like a raccoon?
Dark circles under the eyes, which are actually broken blood vessels under the skin, are caused by several things. Most of the time it is an issue of heredity. Other causes are booze, cigarettes, and caffeinated drinks. But it can still be contained with topical products. So if you have tried everything then it could very well be an iron deficiency, in which case you would want to see a doctor.
Blackheads anyone?
Again, get a facial. Or you could try a cleansing mask. The more effective products are typically made of clay. Be sure to follow the instructions for best results. You don’t have to use these masks all over your face either; you can target your problem areas.
Do you have oily, breakout prone skin?
If you use regular soap to cleanse your skin — stop. Soap strips your skin of natural oils, and your glands react by producing even more oil. Try a gentle foaming cleanser or milk cleanser if this problem is mild. You may also want to use an oil free moisturiser. Note: although benzoil peroxide is a common and effective treatment for breakouts, it is also drying to the skin and can increase oil production.
Are you keeping those lips kissable?
No woman wants to smooch a couple strips of sand paper. Keep those things moisturised. I know you have many things to think about during the day; hydrated lips are probably not top on your list. But you know what it feels like when your lips are chapped and scaly. Licking them only makes them worse. Get a chap stick or lip balm and keep it in your pocket with your change or at your desk at work. Don’t keep it in your car; the heat will melt it.
Ditch that bar of soap.
You know that bar of soap you use to clean under your arms (as well as other non mentionable places)? Please, give me one good reason why you think it’s a good choice for your face? It’s not! Ignoring the fact that you clean your entire body with it, most bar soaps also strip everything off of your skin. Good for most areas of your body, but not for the good oils on your face. Get a product that specifically says “facial cleanser”.
Switch your aftershave for a balm.
If you’re using an alcohol based aftershave, it’s time to pick something else. Many aftershaves create a burning sensation when you apply it to your face after shaving. Shaving gives your skin a slight exfoliation, which means it removes a layer of dead skin. Add in any nicks or cuts you might have, no wonder your skin burns!
