City on fire as Hugh Masekela jets in
Also arriving tonight is Sibongile Khumalo. Ladysmith Black Mambazo jet in on Saturday from other performances in South Africa and straight to Harare Sports Club for the concert.
Italian pianist Silvia Manco and her quartet arrive tomorrow but due to circumstances beyond our control at Harare Jazz Festival Themba Mkize is no longer performing.
Oliver Mtukudzi, a star attraction at the concert, continues to illuminate jazz festivals across the world. Mtukudzi is currently in rehearsal for the festival.
Particularly interesting is that Mtukudzi is continuing his late son Sam’s legacy and will be doing pieces at the festival with the AY Band that worked with Sam who died in a car crash in Harare a month ago today.
As from Monday, Tuku has been rehearsing with the AY Band tuning up their collaboration in readiness for the festival.
Tuku will of course play with his Black Spirits and also do solo, maybe a couple of duets too.
Also performing are local groups the Cool Crooners, Mbare Trio and Jazz Invitation.
On Sunday at 2pm the festival goes to the masses in Highfield for a free family show at the historic Mushandirapamwe Hotel gardens where Q-Montana, Too Open, Mokoomba, The Other Four, AY Band and So What are performing.
