Magic, fortune telling
Children of God must exercise extreme caution in their dealings with prophets and diviners because many false prophets and workers of magic have arisen in the world. Their goal is two-fold: To make money through deceiving naïve clients and to seek recognition of their supernatural powers.
Genuine magic is an art that invokes supernatural powers of the devil. It is a counterfeit of divine miracles.
The Bible does not leave us wondering whether the devil has some supernatural powers or not. It clearly shows us that Satan, as the god of this world, can work magic with the intention to lure even the people of God to his kingdom. When Moses’ rod was miraculously turned into a snake by God, the magicians and sorcerers of Pharaoh used their black magic to create snakes. It was a showdown between divine and demonic powers.
However, snakes of the magicians were finally devoured by snakes of God. The interpretation is that God is greater than the devil.
God has always presented Himself as superior to the devil and He therefore forbids Chri-stians from consulting diviners, magicians and sorcerers. He wants us to depend on Him since ‘greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world’.
Now if God and the Scripture acknowledge the fact that Satan does have some supernatural powers that can work magic and foretell the future, why are we not allowed to take advantage of that? The first reason has already been given above; God has the greater power as the creator of all things including the devil.
Therefore it is only logical for His children to seek His help and wisdom and not to seek the help and wisdom of an inferior power.
The second reason is spelt out in the scripture above that diviners use illusory feats to deceive naïve observers. Most of them do not even have the supernatural powers to work magic or to do fortune-telling. They are just con artists who are after people’s money.
How many times have we read in the newspapers of people that lost fortunes to these quacks and charlatans?
Another reason we are forbidden from divination, soothsaying and magic is to prevent us from embracing false hope, false peace and vain comfort. If their magic is just an illusory feat then you can bet that no solution is offered to your problems. In fact, at the end of it all you will have more problems, more anxiety and more fear of the unknown as the results you were promised never manifest.
Lastly, satanic and demonic consultations defile your spirit and body.
The Bible admonishes us to steer clear of all filthiness of the spirit and body. Some people are actually initiated into witchcraft and Satanism through magic and fortune-telling. Others are raped or sexually abused in one way or the other thus further complicating their spiritual and personal conflicts.
It is true that the most difficult deliverance cases involve those who have been involved in satanic rituals actively or passively. Comprehensive renunciation of all satanic ritual involvement should take place before any deliverance session yields fruit.
The problem is that most Christians are very impatient; they want fast answers to their problems so they take shortcuts which means consulting diviners.
Diviners will always have clients because they promise easy things like salvation without repentance, money without work, anointing without the Holy Spirit and the worst of it all — being your own god.
Enjoying God’s help, wisdom and blessings requires discipline, walking in righteousness and following the guidelines in God’s word. It may seem like it costs to obey God but the truth is that it does not cost; it pays great dividends.
