Alexio shines for climate change
Effects of climate change have now become more evident from north pole to south pole as glaciers melt, the severity of droughts increases and seasons become less predictable.
In some parts of Europe it is still snowing well past winter and in Southern Africa farmers are yet to harvest a crop planted five months ago.
“Climate change is the biggest challenge currently facing the world and will adversely affect us all.
Mankind’s role in contributing to climate change is now clear,” said the British Council, sponsors of Alexio’s latest offering, in a statement.
Alexio’s three-track Afro Jazz classic CD launched in Harare at a local hotel amid pomp and funfare last week seeks to highlight some of the environmental challenges confronting Zimbabwe in a changing global climate. The CD’s three tracks titled Sango, Mother Earth and Dear Sons and Daughters endeavour to remind man-kind of their responsibilities to making the globe a better place to live by being more environmentally friendly. San-go, a really touching song, takes back the listener to the old times of the Biblical Old Testament when mankind was given responsibility by God over everything on earth. Alexio then exposes how mankind has managed to destroy the earth by cutting down trees and polluting the air, land and water. Mother Earth and Dear Sons and Daughters are a follow-up on the message in Sango with the latter being a moving plea by Mother Earth to mankind to remember their obligations for the survival of future generations.
The CD is part of an initiative by the British Council under its “Our Climate, Our Future” programme. The event was well attended but unfortunately Alexio’s message will be hard to come by — the CD is not for sale anywhere on the planet and only 100 copies have been produced so far.
“The album is to be distributed for free once there is a budget for it,” said Kawara. It’s a CD well worth looking out for.
