Balance your spiritual life
Just as in physical health so it is in spiritual health. To achieve optimum physical health one needs to take in all the necessary nutrients like vitamins, proteins and carbohydrates in the correct measures not just for a given period of time but all the times. A well-balanced diet prevents a person from suffering from malnutrition and its attendant health complications. The immune system of such a person is robust and its resistance to foreign entities inimical to good health is very high. And the chances of that person to stay healthy and strong are good. This is exactly the condition, though in the spirit, that Apostle Peter in his last words before death exhorted every believer to attain.
He said that if these things be in you in increasing measure you will not backslide or be deceived by false teachers. The phrase “these things” refer to faith, virtue, knowledge, godliness, temperance, patience, brotherly kindness and love — the desirable spiritual qualities that make up a well-balanced Christian life we discussed in the previous article. These things keep us growing from strength to strength and protect us from the dangers of complacency, heresy and spiritual hollowness. Fruitfulness, effectiveness, usefulness and productivity and security are the enviable results of a well-balanced spiritual life. Peter also said that if these spiritual qualities are in you and abound they will make your calling and election sure and “an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.”
This means you will enjoy undeniable access to the secrets, treasures, resources, power and glory of God’s kingdom in this life and in the one to come. You will be like Jericho, tightly shut against enemy infiltration. You will be the despair of the devil because you will not give him a foothold in your life.
When you call, God is ready to answer you because you are at peace with Him. You are well-rounded and well-polished, blameless and honorable. On the other hand Peter argued that he who lacks these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and has forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
Perhaps you have found the benefits of a well-balanced spiritual life attractive but you wonder how you can attain the desirable spiritual qualities constituting the balanced spiritual life. Do not worry, here is the answer. Believe that you already possess the divine nature in you and know that spiritual virtues are the manifestation of God’s own attributes in you and through you. Know God; keep on following Him and what He says in His word.
Remain diligent in faithful obedience and Christian growth. In the beginning you will exercise these qualities consciously but later on spontaneously.
Some scholar said that these actions do not come automatically; they require hard work especially in the first years until they become your habits.
They are not optional; all of them must be a continual part of the Christian life. We do not finish one and start on the other but we work on them all together. God empowers and enables us but He also gives us the responsibility to learn and grow. He will produce His character in us and through but He demands our discipline and efforts.
