Christ still tempests
The Lord knew that His friends had become too familiar with Him yet they had not yet truly known who He really was. He knew that there still existed a distance between Him and them.
The disciples sometimes came to a point where they were confident that they now understood Him, but stormy situations always betrayed their lack of knowledge of Him. Such situations left them unsure about what manner of man their master was because He, like an eagle, loved storms and was in control but they, like sparrows, were mesmerised by them. Christ wanted them to know that He was not only their master, but He was master over all situations.
Jesus was never moved by circumstances of death, lack, sickness, sinking ship, tribulation or persecution. None of these things moved Him. But in all these unpleasant and challenging situations, He was greatly moved by His followers’ lack of faith. His attention was never on circumstances, but on the reaction of His close fellows who were slow to rightly place Him as God Almighty.
Like the disciples, we all sometimes become too familiar with our God and begin to just see Him as a friend, comrade, and humble Father. But if we limit Him to these titles only, we will be afraid of Him when He assumes a different status in storms, and becomes totally strange to us. Our hearts will chill when we see Him in an aspect we do not know.
His aim will not be to display His power, but that we may come to a proper revelation of Him as the El Shaddai, the God Almighty, who is sufficient for us in times of calmness and in times of storms.
