‘Don’t confuse spiritual gifts, fruits’
However, I also noted that the reader confused spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12) which empower believers, with spiritual fruits (Galations 5:22) which are for good character.
These two are complementary and are both indications of the indwelling Holy Spirit hence the reader’s statement that speaking in tongues is not an indication of being filled with the Holy Spirit was not correct.
The truth is that speaking in tongues is not the only indication of being filled with the Holy Spirit since spiritual fruits like love are also indicators.
The reader’s definition of spiritual tongues as mere native languages like Shona etc without qualifying the argument by saying that the speaking should be done supernaturally and not as a learned skill rendered the definition incorrect as spiritual tongues are a definite supernatural phenomenon.
For one to argue that spiritual tongues are a sign for unbelievers and at the same time he says they are even learnt at school (where unbelievers can also go and learn) is an oxymoron — a real contradiction in terms and as such it lacks scriptural support.
Lastly, the overshadowing of Mary by the Holy Spirit had nothing to do with the impartation of spiritual gifts like tongues, but the incarnation of God.
