How to know God’s will

True, God means for you welfare not evil, prosperity not poverty, health not sickness, marriage not divorce, promotion not demotion and so on. But the nagging question is that why is it not easy for believers to know God’s will for them in any given actual circumstances? Why is it difficult to know God’s will in every area of your life?  For example, someone who is now ready to marry is confused which partner is God’s will for them to marry.
Their confusion causes them to spend a lot of unnecessary hours in prayer praying for the revelation of God’s will. I say unnecessary because prayer in itself is not the essential way to know God’s will. Neither is fasting. A budding businessperson struggles to know which deal or line of business God approves for them. So they search the scriptures incessantly for God’s will in vain as the key to know God’s will is not necessarily in searching the scriptures.
The majority of saints hop from one counsellor, church or prophet to the other in an attempt to find God’s will only to be disappointed everywhere they go. Some prayed and fasted and God revealed His will to them and they were terribly offended.
They had preconceptions and expectations which God asked them to drop away as He showed them His perfect will and they went away sorrowful as they would not accept anything contrary to their preconceived notions. A rich young ruler came to the Lord and he asked Him what he should do in order to have eternal life.
The Lord told him to go and sell all he had and to come and be His follower. He went away sorrowful because he could not let his many possessions go. So how does one come to know God’s will?
The essential prerequisite to knowing God’s will in any particular aspect of your life is a willingness to do it (obedience) once it is revealed to you. This is what John 7:17 simply means when it says, “If any man will do his will, he shall know…” Immediately one is ready to act or obey God’s will God gladly reveals it to them. God’s notion is that
He will not give what is holy to dogs. In other words, He will not reveal His will to those who just want to know it first and then decide whether or not they like it or not. If He will reveal to you His will there should be no choice or excuse but to obey it. However, many believers are not ready for this, so they continue to walk in darkness. If you are struggling to know what God wills for you, check your records and see if you have not disobeyed Him. God will not give any more instructions to you beyond your last point of obedience.
The key to spiritual knowledge is obedience. The price of success is obedience. The base rock of character is obedience. The one thing essential to membership in God’s family is obedience. That which secures entrance into God’s Kingdom, blessings and divine fellowship is obedience. Obedience is the way to know God’s will.
Oswald Chambers said, “The golden rule for understanding spiritually is not intellect but obedience. If a man wants scientific knowledge, intellectual curiosity is his guide; but if he wants insight into what Jesus teaches, he can only get it by obedience. No man receives a word from God without instantly being tested over it. We disobey and then wonder why we do not go on spiritually.”
