Manifestations of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit works in and through believers as a teacher, remembrancer, guide, comforter, counsellor, helper and intercessor. He also empowers believers for ministry. In relationship to and as a service to Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit works as a revealer, testifier, glorifier and witness of the Son of God through believers He anoints and inspires. His work also involves sanctifying believers, making them holy vessels and building in them a polished and godly character.
As our comforter and counsellor as the opening scripture states, the Holy Spirit sympathises with us, counsels us and imparts strength in us especially in our times of grief, difficulty and weakness. People can comfort and sympathise with us but great and genuine solace is found only in the comfort of the Holy Spirit.
People only pity us but the Holy Spirit can actually renew our strength and equip us to comfort others. In most cases people are miserable comforters like Jobs. They seem to weep with you but at the same time accusing you and backbiting you saying, “Serves him well. He appeared to be a holier-than thou.” With the Holy Ghost you are comforted to be a comforter. You become a bridge that others will use to cross the river of difficulty the Holy Spirit helped you to cross over. The Best comforter is he who has gone through it all and the Holy Spirit is acquainted with human sorrow and pain.
The Holy Spirit is the teacher par excellence of spiritual knowledge and heavenly things. He gives instruction concerning the interpretation and understanding of scriptures, the will and ways of God. He teaches us what pleases God, what profits us and what we should do and the choices we should make at the crossroads of our spiritual life. And as our remembrancer, He reminds of the words of Jesus Christ and He also increases our capacity to know, understand, remember and apply spiritual truth in our daily lives.
Romans 8:26 says, Likewise the Spirit help also helpeth our infirmities … but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
According to this verse the Holy Spirit is there to help us in our weaknesses especially in how and what to pray for and also to pray on our behalf and with us in unutterable groanings.
Every prayer that the Holy Spirit prompts us to pray is guaranteed of an answer because He prays according to the will of God. In addition to all the above, the Holy Spirit empowers us for effective preaching or witnessing about Christ, He also convicts sinners so they can realise their need for salvation and He guides us in the will and ways of God.
The Holy Spirit when truly obeyed can steer us around snares of the enemy, pitfalls, and road accidents. Let us discuss the gifts of the Holy Spirit in the next article.
