MDC should be wary of ZANU-PF
EDITOR — I would like to express my sympathy and support for the MDC and the negotiating team during this crucial time.
I also applaud the party for getting back to the people and updating them on what is taking place.
In this crisis, as in any other, information dissemination is vital. We should constantly remind the world about what is happening behind the enemy lines and the sinister moves President Robert Mugabe and ZANU-PF are making.
The Swaziland no-show may be President Mugabe’s waterloo.
President Mugabe might have had an opportunity to meet with the regional leaders in the absence of the MDC but that will not gain him much.
MDC must continue to demand Tsvangirai’s passport, as a necessary preamble to creating goodwill.
We have now every reason to demand things in writing. President Mugabe has demonstrated that he is not willing to play fair.
We should now never leave anything to chance. All the demands must be tabled and agreement sought including the constitutional amendments.
The agreement should be rid of all vague clauses.
The powers of the president, even to declare war and state of emergency must be carried out with the agreement of the Prime Minister.
Parliament must create a parliamentary committee to take stock of what is taking place during these negotiations. The committee must document how government resources are being used.
President Mugabe is obviously planning for the worst-case scenario. He is waiting for an opportunity to crash the party by locking up its leadership.
The party must come up with an emergency plan to avoid detention of national leaders. President Mugabe is also hoping for the thin Mbeki line to bail him out.
