Radical economic transformation remains a pipe-dream: Gigaba

SOUTH Africa’s Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba has warned that radical economic transformation will remain a pipe-dream unless the African National Congress (ANC) ends its internal squabbles.
He was speaking in Welkom in the Free State where he delivered a lecture to commemorate the centenary celebration of struggle stalwart Oliver Tambo.
Addressing a group of about 100 people, Gigabaadmitted that the ANC was at its weakest in its history. He says the party has let many South Africans down, including the youth.
“During this year of Oliver Tambo, even as he had taught so much about unity, we have not handled ourselves well. We should be ashamed of ourselves.”
The lecture was attended by among others, Environment Minister Edna Molewa. OR Tambo was also honoured in song.
Gigaba says global and domestic opponents are a threat to the ANC, the country’s democracy and economic growth.
“Opponents are looking at opportunities to unseat us. We have conceded to them crucial sectors of power.”
Gigaba made an earnest plea to his ANC comrades not to denigrate the party.
The Free State government says more events will be organised to ensure Oliver Tambo’s legacy.
