Significance of Christmas day
Some people think that Christmas is just a time of giving, sharing, visiting with relatives and friends and showing kindness to the poor and needy. Others claim that this popular calendar event is nothing more than a time of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Still others view it as a nice holiday of having fun, drinking and eating marking the end of another year.
These views are not wrong, but they are just incomplete. They emphasise the outward semblance of being identified with Christ instead of experiencing salvation in the innermost parts of our being.
Thus the significance of Christmas day is not celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, giving, visiting, eating and drinking. It is a time to do a reality check of your individual life to see whether you have genuinely accepted the offer of the Saviour of your sins.
If you find that indeed you have received Him as the Saviour of your sins and are born again you then qualify to go ahead and celebrate the birthday of your Saviour in worship, thanksgiving, sharing, visiting, and merry-making.
These acts of celebration should be an outward flow of inner conversion and inner acquaintance with the sent Saviour. They should follow salvation and not to precede it. But, if after self-examination, you find that the Saviour has not saved you, you then need to receive His saving grace first before you get into a time of celebrating. Thus the significance of Christmas day is two-fold: Salvation from the penalty of sin to the unsaved and salvation from the power of sin to the saved.
To the unsaved
Christmas day is a crucial time of reflecting on your sinful life. The word of God declares that Jesus Christ’s name means the one who saves people from their sins. Will you be saved from your sins? Christ desires to spend some time with you this Christmas.
You do not need to be holy or righteous first before you welcome Him into your life. He did not come for the righteous but for the sinners like you. He knows you are struggling to be free from your sins. He knows you have tried everything to break free from the bondage of sin but to no avail. He knows you cannot save your self and that is why he volunteered to come and die in your place for your sins. He loved you too much as God’s special creation to let you die in your sins and spend eternity in hell fire. Now do not frustrate the amazing grace of God by rejecting His love.
The Bible says that if you believe in your heart that Christ died for you and was raised again you will be declared righteous. And if you confess with your mouth that He is your Saviour you will be saved (Romans 10:9, 10). The moment you believe in Him and confess Him, you will be saved from your sins.
You will be changed into a new creature instantly. And you will immediately be translated from the kingdom of Satan into the kingdom of God. Believe Him and confess Him now and you will realise the reality of His Saviourhood. You will be saved from the penalty of sin which is eternal damnation in hell.
To the saved
You have already put Jesus Christ’s Saviourhood to the test and you have experienced the reality of salvation from the penalty of sin. You know that eternal life is yours but you still feel the power of sin strongly luring you away from Christ.
In order to experience salvation from this luring power of sin you need to continue acknowledging Jesus Christ as your Lord.
Without practising the lordship of Christ freedom from the power of sin is not possible. The Saviour should now become your king.
Now allow Him to reign in your life and to rule in all your affairs. His salvation goes before His government. Enthrone Him as the governor of your life and you will experience salvation from the power of sin. You do that by renewing your mind through His word, walking in the Spirit and submitting your plans and thoughts to Christ for control and guidance.
It is only after you have received the Saviourhood and lordship of Christ that you can then enter into the time of celebrating the reality of Christ’s saving power through giving, sharing, visiting and eating in the name of Jesus.
